Donegal 2-7 Monaghan 0-15
Donegal fell to a second defeat in the Dr McKenna Cup as they were edged out by Monaghan at a drenched MacCumhaill Park tonight.
Donegal got off to a great start with a goal from Joel Bradley Walsh in the second minute.
Monaghan hit the next three points but Paddy Carr’s men enjoyed a good purple patch midway through the first half with scores from Jamie Brennan, Daire Ó Baoill, and Bradley Walsh on target.
The Farney men took over late in the half and they hit the last four points and were 0-9 to 1-4 ahead at half-time.
Monaghan kicked the first two points of the second half but Donegal tied matters up by the 58th minute following a free from Johnny McGroddy and a penalty from Luke McGlynn.
The sides shared two points each after that but Monaghan finished strongly and points from Micheál Bannigan (free) and Rory Beggan saw them grab the victory.
Both sides miss out on qualification for the McKenna Cup semi-finals and the attention now turns to the start of the National League at the end of January.
Gavin Mulreany, Kealan Dunleavy, Gary McFadden, Kieran Tobin, and Philip Doherty all made their senior intercounty debuts tonight.
