When the 2010 Mary, Jemma Ferry, crowned Debbie Rodgers on stage at Ionad Spoirt na Rosann, the 21-year-old became only the fourth local entrant to claim the title.
Hosted by BBC’s popular broadcaster Gerry Kelly, 14 contestants from Ireland, the UK and the United States were interviewed in front of a capacity crowd of nearly 500 on the final night of the festival.
Having grown up with the festival, it was a dream come true to participate, said Debbie, admitting that she never expected to win and was just happy to be part of it.
While stressing that she was more a guitarist than a singer, Debbie still gave a wonderful rendition of The Water Is Wide accompanied by her father Joe on guitar.
