Deaths at Fahan Nursing home under investigation

HEALTH personnel are investigating the cause of death of up to 5 elderly residents at the Nazareth House Nursing Home in Fahan, near Buncrana, six of which took place in the last ten days.

Families of the 40 plus residents were contacted on Monday morning and asked not to visit their loved ones until the mystery respiratory illness had been identified.

Five of the six recent deaths occurred at what medical personal are describing as a “cluster” over the past five days.

Experts from HIQA arrived at the nursing home last night (Monday) to begin their investigations into the origin of the infection.

Local medics raised the alarm after the unusually high death rate at the home. The wife of one elderly patient told the Donegal News last night; “I got a phone call from the sister in charge to say not to come to visit my husband yesterday morning and I was told no visitors would be allowed because of the infection. My husband is fine. He has been treated for the infection and seems to be over it,” the pensioner said.
