As Donegal prepares itself to go to the polls next week in the General Election, there is sadness in the county today at the news of the death of a man who gave much of his life to local politics.
Former Donegal County Councillor Séamus Rodgers passed away last evening at the age of 90.
The Annagry native enjoyed a long and successful career in political life which began back in 1960 when he was elected to the council as a member of Sinn Féin.
He had been an active trade union official and his ongoing fight for workers’ rights would see him thrust into the spotlight on a local and national level.
He also represented Democratic Left and the Labour Party.
His last General Election campaign was in the old Donegal South West constituency back in 2007 when he ran for the Labour Party. Prior to that he was a constant name on the ballot sheet during General Elections and contested two European Elections as well.
He would eventually lose his seat in the Donegal County Council elections in 1999 – bringing an end to a long and successful political career – although he would continue to contribute to community life and was always keen to speak out on local issues.
His funeral will take place in his native Annagry on Saturday.
