Day of much emotion: Creeslough falls silent on third anniversary of tragedy

A survivor of the Stardust disaster in Dublin has led renewed calls for a public inquiry into the Creeslough tragedy.

Antoinette Keegan spoke in Creeslough today at a special memorial event which marked the third anniversary of the disaster.

Ten people died in the explosion at the service station on October 7, 2022.

Family members of those who died joined with members of the local community and representatives of the emergency services for a special prayer service led by local priest Fr. John Joe Duffy. A minute’s silence was also observed as Creeslough once again came to a standstill on an emotional day.

In a show of support with the families, Antoinette Keegan attended the service and her call for a public inquiry prompted a round of applause from those present.

Ms Keegan lost two sisters in the Stardust fire on Valentine’s Day, 1981.

Anthony Gallagher, whose daughter Jessica lost her life in the Creeslough explosion, said a public inquiry would bring closure for the families.

He also spoke highly of the local community who have rallied to help them in “immeasurable ways”.

The Gallagher family live just a mile from the site of the explosion.

Hugh Harper whose daughter Leona also died in the tragedy, said lives have moved on “but we’re still stuck on October 7, 2022.

“We have called for the establishment of a public inquiry and we are re-establishing that call today,” he said.

“We need answers to close the chapter of what happened and grieve our loved ones.”
