ILLIES Golden Gloves puncher Darryl Moran leaves today to travel to Croatia with the Irish team for the 24th European Youth Championships.
Moran is part of a nine-man Irish team for the Championships, which get underway in Zagreb tomorrow.
A five-time Irish champion, Moran will compete at 49kgs.
Moran took the Irish Under-18 49kgs title in June, defeating Stephen McKenna from the Old School BC in Monaghan. Moran had toppled Carndonagh man Liam Callaghan in the semi-final and he powered to a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 final win over McKenna.
Pre-Championships, Moran had fought at a tournament with the Kincorth BC in Fraserburgh, Scotland when the Illies club visited.
His win over McKenna was his fifth Irish title and he’ll head to Zagreb confident of making a mark.
Illies GG coach Eamon Duffy said of Moran: “He has put in a lot of work. He’s been training twice a day – not bad when you think he’s at college in Letterkenny all day every day too.”
The Letterkenny IT student is one of 222 boxers, from 39 countries, taking part in Croatia.
