CREDITED with bringing the acclaimed Earagail Arts play ‘Fiesta’ to life, a Letterkenny choreographer now wants to teach the many benefits of creative dance to the local community.
Aoife Toner recently returned from Austria where she trained and performed with worldwide masters in the contemporary dance field.
This week, she was getting ready to impart this knowledge and her experience of dance through her upcoming classes.
As this year’s ‘Dance Artist in Residence’ with An Grianán Theatre, in conjunction with Donegal County Council, Aoife delivered a weekly programme of dance activities in a variety of professional and community settings.
Now, she wants to bring dance to all ages, levels and abilities from the dancer to non-dancer alike.
From Monday, September 15 September, Aoife’s adult contemporary dance classes will take place in the Regional Cultural Centre (RCC) in Letterkenny.
The following afternoon, children’s creative movement and contemporary dance classes will also take place there.
“The adult classes are open to anybody, both male and female, any age from 18 to 99 years-of-age. Age is only a number,” she explained.
“As a participant, you’ll experience beautiful music, dancing together, connection to body and mind, body conditioning, breath work, technique, and a blend of dance styles to name a few things.
“A fantastic benefit of this dance class is that people learn to use the body in the most efficient way, thereby improving people’s posture, flexibility, core strength and fitness as they are guided through dance and movement with ease and grace. People usually also feel they benefit in their mental health and well-being.”
Aoife went on to study in these fields and now likes to bring this knowledge to classes or to the stage.
As a choreographer and dancer, she has also devised a number of original dance theatre pieces which were performed at An Grianán Theatre and the RCC.
