THE Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Centre has moved to a more permanent base at Letterkenny General Hospital (LGH).

The new centre was relocated to Letterkenny Shopping Centre last Septmber following the devastating floods at LGH.

The information centre, which will be staffed by a full-time cancer nurse and volunteers, is now housed in a new room within the hospital until the re-build of the permanent Daffodil Centre is complete.

The Daffodil Centre in Letterkenny was made possible by the generous funds raised at last year’s Donegal Relay For Life and the support of the Darren Clarke Foundation.

It has seen a huge demand for the service since opening almost six months ago with over 1,770 interactions from Donegal cancer patients, their families and members of the public.

The most common queries are from those looking for advice in relation to cancer treatments and related side-effects, support and psychological care and information around practical entitlements and services available.

Information on cancer prevention, early detection and palliative care services was also requested.

Ms Teraze Toby, the specialist cancer nurse who is responsible for the day-to day management of the Daffodil Centre, will continue her work in the new location alongside the trained volunteers.

Anyone who has a concern about cancer can attend the centre at LGH, with no appointment or referral necessary.

The Daffodil Centre is open to the public, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm.

The Cancer Information Service, of which the Daffodil Centres are a part, offers advice, information and support to anyone worried about any aspect of cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care.

The service, which is staffed by experienced and specialist cancer nurses, incorporates the National Cancer Helpline (Freefone 1800 200 700), email and a ‘walk-in’ service.
