CUSTOMERS walking into Siopa Chroithlí on Thursday and Friday last were reminded of by-gone days as oil lamps and candles lit up the store.

The clean-up in the wake of Storm Rachel, which left thousands of homes and businesses across the county without power, including Siopa Chroithlí, was still ongoing when the Donegal News called into Stephen O’Donnell’s premises on Friday morning.

“We survived Storm Rachel as best we could and thanks must go to our staff who went that extra yard to help out,” Mr O’Donnell said.

Siopa Chroithlí and other businesses and homes in West Donegal were plunged into darkness in the early hours of Thursday morning when the local transformer was blown during a lightning storm.

The storm caused major damage to electrical and phone lines in Siopa Chroithlí which also serves as the local post office. Neighbours report hearing ‘an atom bomb’ going off around 1.30am on Thursday morning when the transformer was hit.
