The families of seven of the victims from the Creeslough explosion have called on the Minister for Justice to establish a public inquiry into the tragic event.
Their lawyer, Darragh Mackin of Phoenix Law, has written to Helen McEntee, urging the creation of an independent investigation.
The explosion, which occurred in October 2022, claimed ten lives, including children as young as five.
The families are seeking more than just the ongoing criminal investigation led by An Garda Síochána, emphasising the need for transparency, accountability, and lessons learned to prevent future tragedies.
Phoenix Law is representing the families of Robert Garwe, Shauna Flanagan-Garwe, Catherine O’Donnell, James Monaghan, Jessica Gallagher, Martina Martin and Leona Harper.
According to RTE the letter to the Minister stated: “The holding of such an investigation now will ensure that no further time is lost and indeed will provide our clients with a vehicle for getting to the truth and, in turn, finally being able to grieve for their loved ones.
“Given the nature of our request, we write to formally ask the minister to consider meeting with our clients to discuss this request in more detail at your earliest convenience.
“Finally, as you will appreciate, we are now approaching the second anniversary and as such we would be grateful if this request could be considered at your earliest convenience.”
Minister McEntee’s department has confirmed receipt of the letter and is considering the request, while the families await a meeting to discuss the possibility of a public inquiry.
