THERE have been calls for the main road linking Murlog with Ballindrait to be upgraded as a matter of urgency after a section of the thoroughfare collapsed.

Councillor for the area, Gerry Crawford, said the stretch of road that runs past Murlog Chapel and Murlog National School has been earmarked for resurfacing.

But he is calling for the work to be brought forward to prevent any further potential hazards for motorists.

“The surface condition that exists on the road between Murlog and Ballindrait is extremely dangerous, particularly when you consider the volume of traffic and the number of large commercial vehicles that use it on a daily basis,” Councillor Crawford said.

“Roads funding to Donegal, and specifically for the Stranorlar area, is in general inadequate but funding does exist does for this particular stretch and work is programmed to begin in this current year.

“But what I am asking for now is for the authorites to act as soon as possible to alleviate the dangers that exist on this stretch for road for the many many motorists who use it each day,” Cllr Crawford said.

Donegal County Council said work to resurface the ailing road will begin in mid-June.
