A CRASH yesterday afternoon, which resulted in a woman being taken to hospital, has sparked fresh safety concerns at Magherabeg in Manorcunningham. The two-vehicle collision happened shortly before 3pm on the busy Letterkenny to Derry road, a stretch of road that has become notorious for accidents. Gardai and the ambulance service attended the scene and a woman in her late 30s was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital as a precaution.
Speaking to the Donegal News Cllr Paul Canning said speeding concerns are an ongoing problem along the road which is just outside Magherabeg National school. He said the long term plan is to build a car park to improve safety for school users.
“The board of management are in the process of purchasing property off the landowner in order to build a car park and that will take the cars off the road. Along that road people are turning and moving about and on an overcast evening visibility can be poor. It’s an ongoing process. A car park is really the only option because it is a National Primary road and you can’t put ramps on it.”
After a hard fought campaign for safety measures on the road, it was agreed that electronic speed limit signs flashing 60km/hr would be introduced. However, Cllr Canning said the problem with these type of signs is that drivers get used to them.
“When they came in first people were taking heed but then people take them for granted and that is the unfortunate side of it,” he said.
