AFTER a bizarre twist, a newly married couple have been re-united with a wedding ring they lost at Narin beach over three months ago.
Local woman, Maria Moy, from Sandfield, Ardara, a non consultant hospital doctor and her husband, Eoin Dunphy, had given up hope of ever finding the ring. Eoin had lost his ring while on the beach with friends in June.
However, thanks to the help of local man, Peter Kane, and his metal detector, the ring was found last Wednesday.
Peter, from Drumlonagher, Donegal Town, had found a ring on the beach a week earlier but after an appeal and speaking to the couple it wasn’t their ring.
Semi-retired, Peter took to the beach again and this time miraculously managed to find the couple’s ring, which bore an inscription of their wedding date and Marie’s name.
Speaking to the Donegal News on Friday, Peter said the couple were ‘over the moon’ to find the ring.
“I met Marie and she was just so delighted,” he said.
“It is great to make somebody happy. We had a great wee chat and Marie couldn’t wait to tell her husband,” Peter said.
The couple, who got married last year, lost the ring while visiting the beach in June and had presumed it lost.
Peter explained the bizarre set of circumstances that led to the find.
“I was out walking, as I like to do, on Narin beach when I found a ring on the beach. I contacted Highland Radio I got messages and texts about the ring. Marie, contacted me thinking it was her ring, but after giving me a description and details, it wasn’t her husband’s ring,” he said.
“I told Marie, I’d keep an eye out for the ring- I’ve found many before with the metal detector. Last Wednesday, I went to Narin again and it was a horrible day. The wind was howling, sand blowing and I couldn’t even hear the signals from the metal detector.
“I thought it was a waste of time, but decided to give it one last chance and on the course of a diagonal walk from the low water to the beach, the light lit up on the metal detector. I stopped, listened and dug down a few feet, and low and behold I found the ring. I knew straight away it was the one the couple had been looking for because of the inscription on it,” Peter added.
He text Marie and told her that he may have found her ring… at the second attempt.
“We had a chat on the phone, and she was just over the moon. We met up and I handed over the ring- she was absolutely delighted. I’ve found rings before for people, but this was a chance in a million really. If it had been another few weeks, the chances of finding it would have been slim, because a ring would sink deep down in the sand and would never have been found,” Peter concluded.
