‘The county lads have really drove us on’ – Doherty

Kilcar celebrate winning the Donegal Senior Championship

KILCAR manager Barry Doherty believes that his team are capable of winning the Ulster Senior Club Championship as they prepare for Sunday’s quarter-final with Monaghan kingpins Scotstown in Clones on Sunday.

The Towney club will enter the provincial competition for the first time since 1993, but Doherty doesn’t see why they shouldn’t back themselves to do well in it.

However, he did add that they wouldn’t be looking past Scotstown, and this will be the third time that Kilcar have met the Monaghan club in the Ulster Club Championship and they are yet to defeat them.

Kilcar would have been forgiven for taking their foot off the pedal after capturing the elusive Dr Maguire cup after 24 long years.

However, Doherty says his side are hungry and his star men have been pushing the team on.

“The county lads have really drove us on over the last few weeks,” said Doherty.

“They have played in a lot of big games in Ulster over the last six years, and they want to have success with their club in it too.

“Donegal clubs have reached the final twice in the last seven years, but it’s a long time since a team from the county won it.

“We believe we’re capable of winning it, but we will have to perform on Sunday first.”
