LOCAL councillors have requested a meeting with contractors ahead of the switching on of the new traffic signals at the Polestar Roundabout in Letterkenny.
It is hoped that the switching on of the new traffic lights will improve traffic flow at the busy junction by managing the traffic entering the roundabout. However, local councillors have some concerns.
The new lights and road markings are to start operating next Tuesday, October 17.
At this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny Milford Municipal District, Cllr Donal Coyle said he has received calls from local people who are apprehensive about transitioning to the new system.
He said the crossover from the inside lane to the outside lane of the roundabout when travelling from the Four Lane Road to the Ramelton Road opposite the Neil T Blaney Road junction is causing the most concern and confusion.
Cllr Donal Mandy Kelly suggested that the contractor meet with the Letterkenny area councillors before the lights are switched on to clear up any concerns and to ensure they are “all on the same page”.
A council spokesperson told the meeting that the new road markings will make more sense once the traffic lights are in operation. He said there will be a two week transition period where the phases of the lights will be adjusted to ensure optimum traffic flow.
He urged road users to be patient as it is likely that there will be traffic delays as the lights are adjusted and as motorists get used to the new layout and signals.
This week Donegal County Council also requested that all users of the roundabout familiarise themselves with the revised road layout and to follow the direction signage and road markings to navigate the roundabout safely and effectively.
