INDEPENDENT Councillor John O’Donnell is to be stripped of all positions he holds on council committees.
The decision was taken at a specially convened meeting in Lifford this morning.
A recent report by the Standards In Public Office Commission found that Councillor had “not acted in good faith” when he told an undercover reporter he could help a private wind farm company to secure planning permission.
Following the report, Donegal County Council was asked to seek legal advice to see what powers it had to sanction to the Kilmacrennan man.
Members were told that it was not within their gift to remove or suspend him. They were instead given a number of options, including that they could formally censure Mr O’Donnell.
It was agreed across the board that he should be removed from any committee on which he represents Donegal County Council. He will also be asked to apologise to the local authority and its staff.
Councillor O’Donnell did not attend this morning’s meeting to hear his fate.
