Councillors have their say on driving test delays

COUNCILLORS are calling for action in relation to the long delays facing those wishing to sit a driving test.

The October meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District held last Tuesday heard that the delays are causing issues for people who need a licence either for their job or to get to and from work or college.

More than 1,600 people are waiting to sit a driving test in Donegal and there are now almost 10,000 learner drivers in the county.

Calling on the council to write to the Road Safety Authority to register its concerns, Caothairleach Cllr. Gerry McMonagle said that a commitment has been made to take on 70 extra testers nationwide from next March.

He felt that a priority should be given to appointing new instructors to rural areas and areas with little or now public transport.

The point was also made by councillors that it is important to have as many fully qualified drivers on the roads.
