A LETTERKENNY councillor has spoken of his frustration with how slowly essential minor roadworks are carried out by Donegal County Council.
In a motion submitted at Tuesday’s meeting of Letterkenny – Milford Municipal District, Cllr Donal Coyle called for an emergency workshop to be held on to expedite minor works.
He used examples such as filling of potholes, drainage, erection of signage and removal of overhanging branches.
Cllr Coyle pointed to the recent delay in the erection of a stop sign in Cashelshanaghan.
He explained how it took several weeks to put up the post and then a further week to put up the sign.
“I’m just wondering why there is a delay on something as important as a stop sign – I don’t think there’s any excuse for that to be honest,” he said.
Meanwhile, Councillor Michael McBride also raised the issue in the delay of signs and asked why the council can’t keep a stock of common signs such as stop signs instead of ordering them in.
“They need to be replaced immediately and it is not acceptable that there are delays,” he said.
A spokesperson from the council’s roads department said they respond as fast as possible with the resources available to them.
The spokesperson also agreed that a workshop to discuss these issues can be arranged but recommended it be deferred until the funding allocations for Road Maintenance for 2026 are known, as delivery of these services are depending on adequate funding and resources being provided.
