Councillors at war

BY C.J.MCGINLEY
A COUNTY councillor has taken legal advice over claims he threatened another party member at the last council meeting.

Speaking yesterday (Thursday) Fine Gael councillor John Ryan said he didn’t threaten anyone and was deeply upset his good name and integrity had been challenged.

At the last council meeting Fianna Fáil party whip Cllr Ciaran Brogan alleged he had been threatened in the chamber but didn’t identify who had made the threat against him.

However, yesterday the row intensified after Fine Gael councillor John Ryan confirmed he was the councillor referred to and had taken legal advice. Cllr Ryan rejected he made any threat.

“It is about time Cllr Brogan came forward and told us exactly what happened. He questioned my honesty and integrity at the last meeting but there was no threat- I’m deeply annoyed and upset by those allegations,” he said.

“I didn’t threaten anybody- I stand by my good name. People making those allegations need to be very careful,” he added.

The news emerged as the Mayor of Donegal yesterday strongly rejected claims he is not impartial at council meetings showdown talks between party whips are set to take place today.

Fianna Fáil Councillors this week released a statement alleging Mayor Noel McBride had lost control of meetings and intimidation, bullying and threats were spiralling out of control.
