Presidential candidate Catherine Connolly has returned to Donegal today.
The Independent TD’s schedule includes visits to Donegal Town, Killybegs, Ardara and Dungloe, where she will engage with local communities and rally support ahead of the election.
The close of nominations on Wednesday afternoon officially marked the beginning of the presidential election race, with Deputy Connolly set to face off against Jim Gavin and Heather Humphreys on the ballot.
Deputy Connolly is receiving strong backing from left-leaning political parties, including Sinn Féin and the 100% Redress Party.
In addition to party support, she has gathered backing from independent councillors in Donegal, including Councillor Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig who has expressed his enthusiasm for her return to the county.
Speaking to the Donegal News ahead of this afternoon’s visit to Dungloe, he said Catherine Connolly is a strong voice for the county and our Gaeltacht areas.

The presidential candidate visited Gaeltacht schools including Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair.
As Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council’s Coiste na Gaeilge, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig highlighted Deputy Connolly’s important role as chair of the Oireachtas Irish language committee.
He also spoke of her deep commitment to the Gaeltacht and its community.

She also visited Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada in Arranmore.
While canvassing, Mac Giolla Easbuig shared that the response from local residents has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing support for an independent candidate who stands for Ireland’s neutrality.
“This is what makes her stand out as a candidate,” said Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig.
The presidential candidate has also got close ties to the independent councillor and his political journey – Deputy Connolly officially launched his election campaign back in 2019.
