A call has been made for speed vans to operate at night time in an effort to cut down on the number of accidents and collisions on the county’s roads.
Donegal councillor Michael McMahon has claimed that statistics now indicate a growing number of accidents between 12 midnight and 6 o’clock in the morning.
The Bundoran councillor said driver behaviour in and around his own area is a major concern and he said an extra garda presence on the roads, along with better deployment of speed vans would help address the situation.
He told Friday’s meeting of the Donegal County Joint Policing Committee in Lifford that speeding motorists in towns across Donegal is upsetting and annoying.
“We have quite a bit of it in my own area,” he said.
“I often wonder why the speed vans are not out in the middle of the night
“I know they can be out at peak times at 6pm and 7 o’clock in the morning, but they are not out at times when speeding can be going on.”
One road which Cllr McMahon said was a major concern was the Ballyshannon by-pass – especially at weekends.
He also said drivers are coming into Bundoran and behaving recklessly.
“Fair play to the Gardaí in Bundoran, they have apprehended a few guys in the car park,” he said.
“You can see it every morning because you see the tyre tracks in the sand, and in the field and on the road. I have had numerous complaints about that.
“It is a dangerous and a very annoying situation. It is annoying for the people who are living in that area and it’s also annoying for people who want to go walking during the hours of 9-11 in the evening. It is getting worse.”
