Councillor claims road markings around roads of Letterkenny disappearing

Road markings on many roads in Letterkenny have disappeared, a local councillor has claimed.

“In the last two years, there have been very few lines put on roads anywhere,” Cllr. Donal Coyle declared at the monthly meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council.

He said he was aware of a number of road traffic incidents which he felt may not have happened if there were proper road markings.

His motion calling on the Council to reinstall line markings, without any further delay, was seconded by Cllr. Ciaran Brogan.

In an official response, Cllr. Coyle was told that the Council has a programme of work prepared for a contractor but “the quantity of road markings to be carried out is dependent on the allocations of funding received.”

David McIIwaine, Senior Executive Roads Engineer, said while new road markings had been installed on many main roads, the Council had “a lot to catch up on”.

He also pointed out that road line markings “are not getting a long lifespan” due to the volume of traffic going over them in the town.
