MOTORISTS are “sitting ducks” when it comes to a new static speed camera which has been erected on the main Letterkenny to Derry road, it has been claimed.
And with the fine for breaking the speed limit for passing a static camera having increased to €160, the letter in the post can be a nasty shock for motorists who have been caught out.
Highlighting the issue this week, Cllr. Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly maintained that there are no warning signs on the approach, although there are advance speed camera signs in Bridgend and Manorcunningham.
The new speed camera is located on the N13 between Manorcunningham and Newtowncunningham, and became operational last year.
“Is it mandatory to have signage closer to the cameras?” Cllr Kelly wondered at the January meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council.
While he was “all for road safety” he felt that “motorists are sitting ducks and €160 is a massive fine to any household at this present time.”
The speed camera was one of nine throughout Ireland that were selected based on fatal and serious injury collision data from the last seven years and speed data, as well as feedback from stakeholders.
Chair Cllr. Gerry McMonagle quipped that there are numerous warning signs along the road – in the form of standard 100 kph signage.
