A FIANNA Fáil member of Donegal County Council has claimed he was attacked and verbally abused by a fellow Councillor at a council workshop this week.

Cllr Séamus Ó Domhnaill claims another Councillor attacked and verbally abused him at a Budget 2014 workshop meeting in Lifford on Monday evening.

The Councillor claimed he was a victim of “assault and threatening behaviour” in the Council Chamber, and later in the corridor.

Cllr O’Domhnaill confirmed to the Donegal News yesterday that he had been in contact with both the County Manager, Séamus Neely and Mayor, Cllr Ian McGarvey to enquire if actions will be carried out to protect members from being subject to this type of behaviour. He declined to make any further comment.

A number of councillors and one official are believed to have left the chamber hurridly while at least one tried to get between the parties when the row spilled into the corridor.

code of conduct

Three years ago, then mayor, Cllr Cora Harvey hosted a special meeting to agree on a code of conduct for elected members at Council meetings.

A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said it would be making no comment.
County Mayor, Ian McGarvey said he could not comment on matters pertaining to workshops, but said he would discuss the allegations with Council officials.

Details of the alleged assault were first reported on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta yesterday morning.
