Council to investigate cause of Letterkenny flooding

DONEGAL County Council is to investigate the cause of repeated flooding in areas of Letterkenny such as Charlie Daly Terrace and Swilly View which has left residents living in fear of their homes being damaged.
The issue was raised at Letterkenny Municipal District meeting by both Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh and Cllr Gerry McMonagle who both called for urgent action to tackle the problem.
Cllr Kavanagh said it is a regular issue for pedestrians and motorists and that the Fire Brigade has been called out to deal with flooding in the area on several occasions.
He said what is worrying is the frequency this is occurring and called on Irish Water to update the Council on how they intend to deal with it and find a permanent solution.

“We are getting more and more of these weather events so it is very worrying for householders in this area,” he said.
Cllr McMonagle said the issue is only going to get worse and said he fears the Fire Brigade might not get there in time. He said there are major businesses in the area that need to be protected.

David McIlwaine, Executive Engineer, said in the short term the Council’s Roads Team is planning to carry out an investigation to identify and resolve the possible causes of this flooding.
“In addition to this an application has been submitted to the Department of Transport for Climate adaption funding to carry out assessments of areas of Letterkenny Town where there is repeated issues with flooding,” he said.
Mr McIlwaine added that if they can carry out the works with their own resources they will do it immediately but if the cause is something major then they will have to apply for funding.
