DONEGAL County Council is to establish a year-round collection of waste paints at its recycling centres.
The local authority will also introduce a paint reuse scheme with the possibility of establishing a paint reuse social enterprise.
Letterkenny Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh said it was good news as many people had old tins of paint and no way of disposing of them.
“I hope this new system can be established by the council as soon as possible,” Councillor Kavanagh said.
“In recent years the council has had particular days when they would provide this service at the centres for the public but that has not been happening over the last couple of years.
“Many people took advantage of our lockdowns to do paint jobs on their homes and to redecorate so a huge number of people have old waste paints and no way of disposing of them.”
Councillor Kavanagh said that as a result of the pandemic, the demand for a paint disposal service is “greater than ever and badly needed”.

As to when a day will be provided for the disposal of waste paints, a Council spokesperson said, “We are proposing to establish a year-round collection of waste paints at each of the Council’s Recycling Centres.
“We are currently assessing the most suitable method of doing this while trying to achieve value for money. In tandem with this collection would be the establishment of a paint reuse scheme for non-hazardous water-based paints where paints suitable for reuse would be donated, stored and redistributed to local community groups or an identified social enterprise.
“We are also working with the Rediscovery Centre on the viability of establishing a paint reuse social enterprise in the local area and are part of working group on paint reuse with other local authorities.”
