Council to consider gay marriage issue

BY KATE HEANEY

MEMBERS of Donegal County Council will be asked to support gay marriages when they meet again on September 17.

The motion has been proposed by Independent Councillor John Campbell at the behest of Quigley’s Point woman Claire McCallion, who is Equality Officer for NUI Galway’s students union.

While civil partnership is recognised in Ireland, civil marriage is not. Ms McCallion’s motion to go before council reads; “This Council supports the same rights and entitlements to civil marriages for all citizens of Donegal regardless of race, religion or sexuality”.
