CALLS are to be made for Donegal County Council to re-examine the location of traffic lights in Letterkenny.
Councillor Tómas Seán Devine is expected to table a motion at the next Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting on Tuesday, urging for the revisiting of the “traffic lights situation in Letterkenny”.
The 100% Redress party councillor said he believes traffic lights at McGinley Motors on the Pearse Road in Letterkenny and those located at the new Dunnes Stores at the Retail Park on Neil T Blaney Road are causing more traffic congestion than resolving.
Cllr Devine’s motion further points out that he and others believe that the lights at the new Dunnes Stores should be replaced with speed tables and pedestrian crossings.
“If we are serious about helping traffic move in Letterkenny these things need to be looked at,” Cllr Devine’s motion states.
The call to address traffic congestion in Letterkenny is the latest in a number of months. In November, Letterkenny University Hospital urged patients to leave adequate time to make it to their appointments given the relentless volume of traffic.
At that time, LUH confirmed to this newspaper that it had measures in place to ensure patients being transporting to the hospital via taxi hire arrived in time for their appointments.
Elsewhere, a public meeting in September last, organised by local businesswoman and Aontú representative Mary T Sweeney, heard how the town was “not thriving but choking” due to traffic chaos.
The Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting takes place at Letterkenny Public Service Centre on Tuesday, January 13 at 2pm.
