Donegal County Council is planning to spend more than €800,000 this year on a variety of measures to help improve safety around the county’s schools.
This includes the provision of just over €80,000 for school warden costs.
School safety flashing lights and other initiatives including advance signage and safety railings near school gates are also part of the initiatives.
Under the Safe Routes to School programme, improvements may include upgraded bus set-down and crossing facilities adjacent to the schools, and improvements that aim to relieve congestion, reduce speed at the school gates during drop-off and pick-up times.
Some schools also promote the use of alternative transportation such as walking and cycling as well as encouraging use of what has been called “park and stride” from adjacent public parking.
