REQUESTS have been submitted to Google Maps by Donegal County Council to properly name the Old Glencar Road in Letterkenny.
The road currently is wrongly named as the Grange Road.
The name was coined in error by Google Maps a number of years ago, but much to the annoyance of locals, it has stuck, so much so that Donegal County Council have even referred to the road as the Grange Road.
There is a nearby estate called The Grange, but this is accessed from the adjacent Glencar Road, so there is no real relevance.
This confusion has led to problems for delivery drivers, taxis and people who have recently moved to the area, as the road goes by two completely different names.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny – Milford Municipal District, local councillor Jimmy Kavanagh asked the local authority for an update on what progress has been made on getting the name changed on Google Maps, council documents and signage on the road.
In response to his question a spokesperson for the council said: “Requests have been submitted to Google Maps to make this amendment but the change to map has not yet been made. This is currently being followed up.”
Cllr Kavanagh first raised the issue with the council almost two years ago. He was concerned the mix-up could cause confusion for emergency services responding to incidents.
