Council owed €16million in rates

Speaking at Monday’s meeting in Lifford, Finance Officer, Mr Gary Martin said efforts were ongoing “to maintain buoyancy” but commercial rates continued to be major challenge in the current economic climate.

“In all my years on the council I’ve never seen such pressure on businesses by way of cash flow. The majority of rate payers are paying as best they can – be that hotels or the retail sector. Every month there are substantial direct debits,” he said.
