A MEETING of Donegal County Council has been adjourned until next Monday after tensions boiled over and a heated row broke out among Councillors.
The members of Donegal County Council met online today for a full council meeting, but the meeting was adjourned for 45 minutes after a row broke out.
When councillors reconvened at 3.30pm, Cathaoirleach Jack Murray adjourned the meeting until next Monday.
The meeting started at 11am but by 2.30pm, councillors were still debating item number three on the agenda and discussing what the level of Local Property Tax should be in 2022.
During the meeting, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council Jack Murray attempted to maintain control and was forced to mute councillors several times as they spoke over each other.
Councillor Liam Blaney proposed the adjournment of the meeting saying, ‘I heard insults being thrown at another Councillor including ‘you’re a silly daft old man.’
“I think it is both discriminatory and bullying and I am asking that this meeting is adjourned and the Whips of the parties sit down and decide how we are going to move forward with these meetings.
“It cannot go on the way it is going,” said Cllr Blaney.
Cllr Frank McBrearty challenged Cllr Blaney to identify the person he was talking about.
Cllr Niamh Kennedy proposed that the meeting continue, however, her motion was defeated with 34 votes against and only four councillors voted for the continuation of the meeting.
The council meeting will reconvene on Monday July 26.
