Donegal County Council’s monthly meeting has been adjourned until April 6 after a number of incidents led to Gardai being called to the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny this morning.
Cathaoirleach, Cllr Jack Murray said he had been told by staff and councillors that they did not feel safe and said he had no other option but to once again adjourn the meeting.
“The Gardai were called, they were here for most of the morning. A number of very worrying incidents have taken place and there are still statements being taken as the Gardai remain present,” said Cllr Murray.
“It is evident to me through discussions with a number of members of staff and a number of elected representatives that people don’t feel safe here today because of what has happened.
“As Cathaoirleach I have a duty of care that people do feel safe and it a place where people can carry out their business and unfortunately that hasn’t happened.
“I have no other option but to adjourn this meeting yet again to Wednesday 6th April as the matter remains with the Gardai.”
Cllr Murray apologised to the people of the county and said he shares their frustration.
“I want to take this opportunity on behalf of everyone to apologise to the people of Donegal for what has happened again. There are people whose homes are falling down with mica and I realise now that those people are going to be extremely angry and extremely let down by this council. I fully share that frustration but unfortunately if people come to these meetings and don’t feel safe I cannot allow that to continue so we need to reach a position where people can feel safe in here, can carry out their elected duties, their duties as staff and I think we all have to work to get to that point.”
