Council issues reminder to XL Bully owners ahead of ban next month

DONEGAL County Council has issued a reminder to XL Bully owners in the county ahead of the upcoming ban on the breed.

On October 1, 2024, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, introduced new regulations under the Control of Dogs Act.

The regulations will prohibit the ownership, keeping, purchase, disposal, abandonment, allowing to stray, breeding or importing of XL Bully type dogs after February 1 this year.

Minister Humphreys announced the ban in the interest of public safety following a number of horrific attacks by XL Bullies last year.

Ahead of the ban, Donegal County Council said XL Bully owners have two choices.

Owners can either surrender the dog to the local authority Dog Warden service where the dog will be euthanised in a humane matter or they can apply for a Certificate of Exemption before February 1, 2025.

This certificate will allow owners to keep their dog until the end of its natural life.
