Council issues first wildfire warning of 2020

DONEGAL County Council has issued its first wildfire warning of 2020.

The local authority said it is appealing to landowners and members of the public to refrain from activities such as lighting fires outdoors and dumping hot ashes in order to prevent wildfires.

Under the Wildlife Act, it is an offence to cut, grub, burn or otherwise destroy any vegetation growing on any land not then cultivated between March 1 and August 31. The Council is warning that where brigades have to respond to wildfires the full cost of the call-out will be charged to the landowner.

A Council spokesperson added, “Householders or building owners in areas susceptible to wildfire are advised to remove or cut back any vegetation in the immediate vicinity of their house, building or oil tank to prevent wildfires damaging or destroying their property.”
