As we prepare to celebrate Christmas and ring in the New Year, Donegal County Council and Donegal Road Safety Working group (DRSWG), in conjunction with An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority encourage all road users to prioritise safety on our roads throughout the busy festive period.
To date this year, 170 people have lost their lives on Irish roads and many others have sustained serious injuries as a result of road traffic collisions.
An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority, has launched its annual Christmas and New Year Drink Driving Campaign. An Garda Síochána will undertake a dedicated road traffic enforcement operation throughout the Christmas period. This operation commenced on Monday, December 1 and will run until 7am on Monday, January 5.
The focus of the operation is to increase Garda visibility and to detect and deter dangerous behaviours including drink and drug driving, speeding, distracted driving and the non-wearing of seatbelts.
Inspector Sean Mc Daid, An Garda Síochána stated, “We are appealing to all those that will be taking to the roads over the Christmas period to slow down, take extra care and to give your driving your full attention and never, ever drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Many people will be out socialising with colleagues, friends and family over the next few weeks. Please plan ahead for your journey. Leave the car at home and avoid driving the following morning.”
“Members of An Garda Síochána will be out day and night across the country as part of our enforcement campaign. We will intercept drink and drug drivers. If convicted, you will lose your licence. Please don’t be one of them. 11 people have lost their lives on Donegal roads so far this year. No Garda wants to be calling to your family’s door this Christmas.”
The Christmas and New Year period is one of the busiest times of the year on Irish roads, with increased numbers of people travelling and a higher risk of serious or fatal collisions.
Donegal Road Safety Working Group (DRSWG) are highlighting the importance of road safety and urging all road users to plan their route, leave extra time, travel with care and stay alert.
Drivers are reminded to adjust speed to suit road and weather conditions, never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and do not get into a vehicle as a passenger with someone whom you suspect may be under the influence and ensure that all passengers – front and rear – are wearing a seatbelt.
Drivers are also advised to plan their journey in advance and take breaks to avoid fatigue, avoid distraction of mobile phones and ensure their vehicle is in good working order, including lights, brakes and tyres.
Pedestrians and cyclists are reminded to make arrangements to get home safely particularly if you walk/cycle on darker morning and evenings, or after a night out and to wear bright or reflective clothing to help to be safe and be seen.
High Visibility vests are available free to members of the public at the Donegal County Council Public Service Centres, County House in Lifford and at Garda stations.
