LATE night parties, assault and vandalism were among the dozens of complaints about anti-social behaviour made to Donegal County Council last year.
Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act show that the local authority dealt with 85 grievances in 2020, more than double the number lodged in 2016.
Given its geographical size it is no surprise that the bulk of the complaints, 51, emanated from the Letterkenny and Milford Municipal District.
Second on the list was Lifford/Stranorlar where eleven people contacted Donegal County Council to express their dissatisfaction at the behaviour of someone living in their vicinity.
That was followed by Donegal Municipal District with ten complaints, Glenties with eight and five in Inishowen.
This year to date 40 complaints have been lodged by irate individuals. And while last year Letterkenny was top of the anti-social behaviour table by a large margin, the trend looks to be changing.
So far in 2021 only ten complaints have come from Letterkenny/Milford, the same number as Lifford/Stranorlar.
Just one behind on nine is Glenties followed by Inishowen on seven and Donegal on four.
A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said that while they could not give exact details of each complaint, they could give an overview.
“In general terms the nature of the complaints include late night disturbances, parties, noise, threatening or inappropriate behaviour, assault, neighbour disputes, dumping rubbish and vandalism,” said Assistant Senior Executive Officer Patsy Lafferty.
The number of contacts made between members of the public and Donegal County Council about anti-social activity has fluctuated over the past five years.
In 2016 a total of 40 complaints were lodged. That then more than doubled in 2017 to 86 before dropping back to 56 in 2018. There was a spike again in 2019 to 79 before climbing further to last year’s figure of 85.
