Donegal County Councillors paid tribute to renowned journalist and broadcaster Paddy Clancy at today’s plenary council meeting in Lifford.
Councillor Michael McMahon proposed a minutes silence be held to mark his passing on Friday and described him as a “fearless journalist, who told the truth at all times”.
A native of Sligo, Paddy, who was 82, lived in Ballyshannon and had long made Donegal his home.
A former journalist with the Sligo Champion and also the Donegal People’s Press, he might best be remembered for his time presenting ‘It Says in the Papers’ on RTÉ Radio 1, a slot he made his own for over three decades.
Cllr McMahon praised his six decades of reporting on significant stories both at home and overseas.
He spoke of a five week trip Paddy took with President Robinson to Somalia in 1990 as the country grabbled with famine and how he also reported on the Bloody Sunday atrocities in Derry in 1972.
Cllr McMahon also spoke of his contribution as the “Irish voice in America” when he spoke out for the undocumented Irish.
He also paid tribute to his family, friends and colleagues throughout the years.
