THE provision of crash barriers along the side or roads can cost up to €200,000 for a 200 metre stretch, it was claimed at a meeting of Donegal County Council.
Cllr. Denis McGee tabled a motion seeking clarification on the whole procurement process for crash barriers (known officially as Vehicle Restraint Systems) and asked for details to ensure that taxpayers receive value for money.
He was informed by council officials that the specification has evolved over the last number of years.
No specific funding is provided for the non-national road network, but the council will contact the Department of Transport to seek a funding programme for the repair and installation of crash barriers on the non-national road network.
