Council condemns malicious false alarm

Donegal County Council has condemned a malicious hoax call last night which led the Fire Service in Letterkenny to respond.

At about 9.35pm yesterday Letterkenny Fire Brigade was alerted to fire at Saint Eunan’s College.

A Donegal County Council spokesperson said that no fire was found by the fire brigade.

“It was concluded that the call was a malicious false alarm,” they said.

“Such calls are a misuse and abuse of an emergency service and could result in a delayed response to a genuine call thereby putting life or property at risk.

“Such calls also impose an unnecessary cost on the commercial rate and local property tax payers of the County.

“Malicious false alarms are an offence under section 30 of the Fire Services Act, 1981 and are reported to An Garda Síochána,” they added.

Donegal Fire Service reported 11 malicious false alarms last year, this was a slight increase from the eight reported during the 12 months previous.
