FORMER Tánaiste Mary Coughlan is the only nominee left in the running for the vacant Donegal GAA Chairperson role after Sean Dunnion confirmed that he will not be letting his name go forward to County Convention.
Former Chairperson Dunnion had been nominated but has decided he will focus on his re-election for the position of Central Council Officer.
Cieran Kelly had also been nominated for the role of Chairperson but signalled yesterday that he won’t be in the mix.
Coughlan has been heavily involved with St Naul’s since leaving politics and is their current Club Secretary. She is now expected to replace Fergus McGee in the top position on the Donegal GAA executive.
Dunnion told the Donegal News: “I would like to thank the clubs that nominated me for the position of County Chairperson and also thank those that encouraged me to consider it strongly over the past couple of weeks. However, I have decided not to let my name go forward to the County Convention and I will be happy to support the remaining candidate for the position Mary Coughlan if I am returned to the county management committee for 2024.
“My hope is that I get the support of County Convention to retain my position as Donegal’s representative on Central Council and complete the last year of my 5-year term.”
