CHAIRPERSON of the Donegal GAA County Board and former Tánaiste Mary Coughlan has shut down rumours that she will be throwing her hat into the ring to replace Michael D. Higgins as president.
Speaking to the Donegal News, the Frosses native expressed her shock at the circulating rumours.
Becoming the first female chairperson of the Donegal County Board in 2023, Ms Coughlan said her emphasis at present is working towards Donegal’s All-Ireland semi-final against Meath on Sunday week.
“And that is enough,” she joked.
“I wouldn’t think that would be on my radar.”
The upcoming election, which will determine the tenth president of Ireland, must take place by Tuesday, November 11 this year.
The incumbent president, Michael D. Higgins is term-limited, having served the maximum two terms permitted under the Constitution of Ireland.
A number of individuals, including Peter Casey, entrepreneur and unsuccessful candidate at the 2018 elections, and Conor McGregor, professional mixed martial artist and boxer, have declared their intentions to seek the necessary nominations to run in the election.
However, no prospective candidate has yet received the necessary nominations for the 2025 election.
