Cosy homes for council tenants

By Kate Heaney

HOUSEHOLDERS in an estate in Letterkenny will see their energy bills shrink considerably next winter as they are currently undergoing a major retrofit to bring them to a B2 Building Energy Rating (BER).

The work on the 59 houses is being funded by Donegal County Council at the houses they rent to tenants at Ard Na Ri in the town.

Works include upgrading windows and doors to triple glazing; upgrade of heating systems to an air to water heat pump and the closing of chimneys and open fire/stoves.

The houses were previously insulated by the council ensuring a more energy efficient home for the tenants.

Work began on the homes on April 24 and is expected to be finished within 12 weeks.

When completed the BER rating will go from what was a D1 to a B2.

McMenamin Building Contractors Ltd of Dreenan, Ballybofey are carrying out the work.
