THE Creeslough Community Association is to unveil a memorial dedicated to corn cutting this evening.
Corn cutting is synonymous with Creeslough because of the song ‘The Emigrant’s Letter’ by Percy French, which is better known as ‘Cutting the corn in Creeslough today’.
“Percy French wrote the song but we like to say that it was Creeslough’s Bridie Gallagher who made it famous,” laughed Majella McFadden, the newly appointed Chairperson of the Creeslough Community Association (CCA).
The memorial will also pay tribute to the many people who emigrated from the village, such as Kay McNulty a computer programming pioneer who was honoured last week, Majella explained.
“One of our goals with the CCA is to make this village somewhere our children and grandchildren will want to come back to. So every wee bit we do, every development we undertake and every event we hold is highlighting both what we have here in Creeslough and what we are capable of doing.
“It is a project that was in the pipeline that is now coming to fruition, so we are looking forward to seeing it unveiled,” Majella added.
The project is very important to Majella as it was initiated by her father, the late Ben McFadden who was also the chairperson of the CCA.
“I must have landed this job by default because I am not a patch on him. There is a really great committee there that helped him and they are steering me in the right direction,” Majella humbly said.
The unveiling will take place this evening at 6pm at Muckish Terrace, Creeslough.
