Construction on social houses at old fire station to commence next month

By Chris Ashmore

WORK on the construction of eight new social housing units on the site of the old fire station in Stranorlar could begin next month, councillors have been told.

For years the site just off the Main Street has been in a state of disrepair, but now a new lease of life is on the way.

An update circulated to councillors at a recent special housing meeting stated that a “tender evaluation to appoint contractor is being finalised” subject to final approval from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, “and adherence to contractual requirements. Works are scheduled to commence in March 2026.”

The news has been widely welcomed, not least because of the slow nature of advancing the project. Councillors on Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District Council gave the green light for the project back in January 2024.

The new development will comprise four two-bedroom apartments and four one-bedroom apartments, with a private residential courtyard, parking and a realignment of footpaths with landscaping.

According to Donegal County Council, “the project has undergone a public consultation process and was granted planning permission on January 16, 2024, subject to 21 conditions. The redevelopment is expected to enhance the character and quality of the surrounding area and provide a sustainable housing scheme under the Government’s Housing for All Plan.”

The new development is set to be named ‘Rosebud Place’ in homage to the fire station’s original name.
