CALLS have been made for flashing speed signs to be erected in Churchill due to concerns of excessive speeding in the village.
Councillor Michael McBride raised the issue at Tuesday’s meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
He said the village has a playground, a pub and a church all along the main road which is a busy with commuters as well as those travelling to nearby historic and heritage sites.
In response the council said that the erection of traffic feedback speed signs would be the final option.
They said a speed survey will be carried out to assess if speed is an issue and that they will liaise with the gardaí to have a presence at this location.
Cllr McBride was not impressed with the council’s response.
“Speed traps will fine people for breaking the law, but that is after the problem has happened.
“In this village we need to stop the speed – gardaí going out occasionally will not solve the problem,” he said.
“It will be too late when somebody is killed… We can’t sit back and do nothing, it’s not an option.”
He pointed to Newtowncunningham as a good example, describing it as the ‘Rolls Royce’ with regard to traffic calming measures.
Cllr Tomás Seán Devine added to the comments, he said when it comes to safety, of children especially, money shouldn’t be an option.
“Please I would encourage the council to try their hardest to get this implemented,” he added.
Cllr Ciaran Brogan said that Churchill is not being given the proper destination as a village, he also urged council to reconsider their response.
He suggested that all councillors in the Municipal District visit the village to witness the issues themselves. Representatives from the council also agreed to the visit.
