CONCERNS have been raised following a number of ‘near misses’ at newly installed crossings in Ballybofey.
The High Visibility Crossings were installed in January at four existing pedestrian walkways in Ballybofey and Stranorlar.
The new road markings were introduced to help improve driver awareness of pedestrian crossing movements.
But since their installation there have been calls for additional signage and lighting to inform drivers and pedestrians of the new layout.
At this month’s meeting of Lifford Stranorlar Municipal District, Councillor Patrick McGowan asked for an update on the zebra crossing in Ballybofey and when the additional signage would be installed.
He said there had been a number of near misses in the area in recent times and additional signage is essential to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
“Many motorists don’t see the crossing until it is too late and in front of them.
“Pedestrians are nearly on the bumper of the car and half way across the road before the car sees the crossing.”
“There have been a number of near misses there and I do think lights need to be installed to ensure the safety of all road users.
“This is very unsatisfactory from TII (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) and road design to have left it like this,” said Cllr McGowan.
The council has previously explained that the markings should be used by drivers to anticipate potential pedestrian crossing manoeuvres on the street ahead of them.
