Concerns over lack of street lights around Letterkenny

FUNDING for new public lighting is generally not available for areas outside the town speed limits, councillors heard at the monthly meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council.

Cathaoirleach Cllr. Gerry McMonagle noted with disappointment that there was no funding available for public lighting at the crossroads at Wood Road and Carrygawley and also at the Aridganny junction on the outskirts of Letterkenny.

He pointed out that there are a significant number of houses in this area, and wondered if funding could be secured.

Cllr. Donal Coyle, who seconded his motion, said that 30 years ago there was one house in the area; now there are about 25.

He felt that there was a ‘great reluctance’ to put up public lighting in rural areas and stressed that safety should be taken into account when considering applications.

Council official David McIlwaine felt that the provision of public lights outside town areas could be something discussed at a forthcoming policy meeting.
