CONCERNS have been raised about the condition of one of the last remaining iconic railway arches.
The railway arch at Upper Corkey, Manorcunningham is covered in ivy and is in need of remedial repairs.
The railway arch was part of the rail route from Derry, Letterkenny to Burtonport.
This section of railway line was operational for seventy years from 1883 to 1953 during which time steam trains passed over this arch several times a day.
The line finally closed on Saturday, August 8, 1953 when it had become no longer sustainable.
At a recent meeting of the Letterkenny Milford MD, Cllr Donal Coyle called on the council to carry out the necessary remedial works and remove the ivy surrounding the arch.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Coyle said, “This is one of the iconic arches that was part of the Derry to Letterkenny and Burtonport railway.
“There are not too many left now and for anyone who wants to see a piece of art, they should go see this.
“However, the ivy is growing right up around it and there is a danger that it will start to affect the actual structure of the railway arch.
“The remedial work would protect the arch and ensure it is kept in good condition,” said Cllr Coyle.
A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said, “An assessment will be carried out of the works required and considered for inclusion in the works programme.”
