DONEGAL County Council is set to carry out a visual inspection of the old Milford Hotel building amid growing concerns about its safety.
This week Cllr. Declan Meehan called on the local authority to carry out “an urgent structural survey and building condition assessment” in order to “assess the risk posed to public safety by the deteriorating state of the building on the main thoroughfare in the town.”
In his motion on the issue at the November meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District Council, he pointed out that the site is earmarked for development under the Milford Town Centre First Plan.
Cllr. Meehan stated that the building is “an eyesore” and is “potentially unsafe”. He said: “I would like to see the exact condition of the building established, in partnership with the owners of the building.
“We need to find out what risk it poses for public safety,” he continued, adding that one chimney structure looks “particularly precarious” and has deteriorated over the past number of years.
Cllr. Pauric McGarvey seconded the motion.
In an official response, Cllr. Meehan was told that the council “has been in direct contact with the property owner regarding the condition of the property” and the council has made arrangements to “undertake an initial visual inspection of the property.”
